One of the many delights of Christmas in London are the Christmas Markets - often themed around

The history of Christmas markets goes back to the Late Middle Ages in the German speaking part of Europe. The Dresden Christmas market - first held in 1434 is often (incorrectly) said to be the oldest Christmas market. It attracts between 1.5 and 2 million visitors a year and has over 60 stalls.

Many of the markets below are annual, although some have not yet confirmed dates for Christmas 2009 - we'll update them as soon as we know!

>> Cologne Christmas Market in London 2009
20th November - 23rd December 2009. A German style Christmas Market in London – more than 30 wooden chalets situated between Southbank Centre and London Eye.  Nearest tube is Waterloo.

>> Country Living Christmas Fair
11 – 15th November 2009. You’ll find everything you need for the perfect Christmas, from the market with hand-crafted decorations to traditional toys, the latest fashion, limited-edition jewellery and a mouth watering array of festive food and drink.  This Christmas Fair is in Islington, North London.

>> Spirit of Christmas Fair

4th - 8th November 2009. Based at Olympia (West London), the Spirit of Christmas Fair includes a Food Hall, Producer's Market, and a British Designer's Market. A great place to prepare for your Christmas in London.

>> Christmas Slow Food Market
19th - 22nd December 2009 at the South Bank Centre. 40 specially selected traders will sell from stalls on Southbank Centre Square - plus a demonstration tent for tips for Christmas menus.

>> German Christmas Market
21 November 2009 - 3 January 2010, at the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. Over 50 beautifully decorated chalets offering continental gifts and refreshments.

>> Boutique de Noel
12th - 13th November 2009. Two day shopping extravaganza, held at the Kensington Town Hall will include live music, cocktails, two auctions, and of course plenty of Christmas shopping.

 

>> Christmas Chocolate Festival
Friday 11 December 2009 - Sunday 13 December 2009 , 11am - 8pm daily (6pm Sunday) at the Southbank Centre. Dozens of stalls, all individually focused on chocolate - whether it is making it, drinking it, shaping it or eating it. Look out for kits to make raw chocolate at home, hot chocolate and even chocolate-infused savoury treats.

>> Tower Bridge European Christmas Market

2009 Dates TBC. The Christmas Market at Tower Bridge is based on the traditional Christmas markets of Northern Europe - but overlooked by one of London's greatest landmarks.

>> Greenwich Christmas Market
2009 Dates TBC.  Escape the high street and shopping centres and soak up the lively atmosphere of South East London whilst exploring the many stalls, all providing unique and interesting gift ideas.

>> Christmas at Kew
2009 Dates TBC. Christmas at Kew is full of festive sparkle and activities for all the family, with family storytelling, the Plantomime, horse and carriage rides, as well as the chance to visit Father Christmas.

>> Natural History Museum Christmas Fair
2009 Dates TBC. 24 chalets selling everything from original clothing and jewellery to candles, ceramics and toys, the fair is the perfect place to find that special Christmas present. The Museum is in South Kensington, London SW7.
